Take it in turns to choose two pictures, for example, an umbrella and a book, and make up a story about them: ” I need to return my book to the library. It was raining really hard so I took my umbrella.”

Directions

Use pictures of nouns for this activity; you could choose a selection from the photographs attached.

Spread the pictures out, face down on the table. You will need enough for each group member to be able to choose two.

The adult takes a turn first to model an appropriate story. For example, if the pictures picked were a banana and a camera, the story could be: “I went to the market to buy some bananas. All the fruit looked so amazing, I took a photo with my camera.”

This activity can be extended by asking the children to predict what might happen next in the story, or by asking them ‘wh’ questions about their answer.

To make the activity easier, spread the pictures out face up, so the children can choose 2 pictures which are semantically linked.
