method

Directions

Have the children sitting in a circle. Ask each child to choose a musical instrument.

Then use an adult to model being the leader; give the leader something to wear, for example a hat or a scarf, as a visual reminder of who to follow.

When the (adult) leader starts playing, prompt the children to join in. Encourage the children to watch the leader. When the leader stops playing, prompt the children to stop playing too!

Practice several times with the adult leader, before selecting one of the children to be the leader.

This activity can also be used to encourage the children to request a turn. Use the hat / scarf as a visual prompt and ask the group “who would like to be the leader?”
