Topic ideas: Teenagers / Young Adults engage well in discussion topics that are relevant to them and ‘real’ such as current affairs issues relating to them and activities they have recently been involved with or talking about what has happened to them re Traumatic Brain Injury.
First Session
- Go over purpose of group and pre-agreed individual targets (see resources for examples)
- Getting to know each other any 10 min icebreaker activity (e.g. in pairs find out 3 things about each other and feedback to group)
- Brainstorm and agree basic group rules re behaviour
- Brainstorm what are good conversation skills(see example from a group in resources)
- Brainstorm conversation topics they want to talk about
- Discuss format for group and concept that it is their group, e.g. we will go over targets at the start of groups, choose a group member to lead the group, chat about a topic you choose, give peer feedback to each other.
Subsequent sessions
- Welcome and go over individual targets
- Hand-out group rules, good conversation skills, and topic list from previous session
- Volunteer for group leader and go over the role of the group leader (see resources for example)
- Support group leader to get the ball rolling
- Support conversation skills if necessary
- After discussion (debates and contentious issues work well!) support group members to give peer feedback or rate themselves out of 10 on their targets.
SLT resources to take into groups
- List of individual targets
- Lists of group rules/good conversational skills
- Topic resources, e.g. current news articles from websites
- Case note sheet which includes each clients targets and a space to write comments during the session.
