Directions

You will need two sets of cards; one with a range of different conversation topics (e.g. personal information about your body and health, your phone number, your plans for the weekend) and one with a range of different types of conversation partners (e.g. a complete stranger, a policeman, a best friend.) See resources.

Incorporate this activity into any turn-taking game. Spread out the conversation partner cards and keep the topic cards in a pile face downwards. When it is a client’s turn, they choose a topic card and talk about which conversation partner they would / wouldn’t talk about that topic with. Initially this can take the form of a discussion between you and the client or the group.

As the client gets more familiar with the activity reduce the amount of help and encourage them to find appropriate conversation partners and then explain why they are appropriate (i.e. assessing whether they have learned what you’ve been targeting.)
