Rhyme fishing

Generating rhymes from photos

Abstract
This is a task that is viable with a large variety of clients as selected pictures can be used to target a client’s other therapy goals (e.g. phonology) while also targeting early literacy and rhyme skills. Good with single clients or groups.

Directions

First decide what materials to use. I find animal pictures easy first targets that are good at holding kids attention (think: duck, hen, cow, not giraffe). You could also select word initial /s/ pictures, if your client needed help with that phoneme.

Simply place pictures on the table (I do face-side up initially) and introduce the rhyme activity to the client. Then either have them select pictures one at a time or take turns with the pictures generating rhymes and talking about rhyming.

Once familiarity with the task and concept are established pictures can be turned face-down for more unpredictable play.
