Drawing from instructions

Children follow verbal instructions, to produce a copy of the original picture.

Children can practice giving and following instructions to produce copies of simple pictures or patterns.

Directions

Choose a picture or pattern appropriate for the children you are working with (see examples.)

Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil, you may need erasers available too!

Model how to give clear, concise instructions for example, “At the top of the page, draw a big circle … at the bottom of the page draw a small square … in the square draw a star … colour the star in.” Encourage the children to ask for clarification if required.

Then show the children the target picture, and ask them if their attempt is the same. Discuss any concepts the children have struggled with.

Next ask one of the children to give the instructions.
