Directions

First prepare a large number of words to be drawn; write these down and cut them out, so that each piece of paper has one word on it, for example words see the attached resource.

Give the first drawer a pencil and plenty of paper. Then give them a word and ask them to draw it.

If the rest of the group are unable to guess the word from the picture, the adult can facilitate, for example, suggesting what semantic category the word belongs to or highlighting and labeling key parts of the drawing.

When the group have successfully guessed what the word is use the picture to reinforce, or introduce new vocabulary. One child I work with drew a wonderful picture of a lion, with a huge mane, but no one in the group knew the word ‘mane.’ I was able to use the child’s drawing to introduce the new word.

Please add more ‘words’ to the attached resource!
