Directions
First prepare a large number of possible topics, from various semantic groups. Write these down and cut them out so that each piece of paper has one topic on it, for example topics see attached resource.
Find something to time 1 minute with: a sand timer is good as the pupils can see how long they still have to go.
The adult takes the first turn, modeling using thinking time and then how to structure the account. For example, if the topic is ‘penguins’ the adult could talk about: - what category they are in, - what they look like, - where they are found, - what is special / unique about them.
This structure can be represented visually in a word web to support pupils (see attached?)
Each pupil in turn is given a topic to try to talk about for 1 minute. The pupils are encourage to monitor each other in terms of relevance and topic maintenance and asked to suggest additional ideas when each pupil’s 1 minute is up.
